Low-Shedding Dog Breeds

Are any dogs 100% hypoallergenic?

No, and the word does more harm than good. People do not react to hair. They react to proteins - mainly one called Can f 1 - that a dog makes in saliva and sheds in dander, the flakes of skin coming off every animal all the time. Every dog produces it. A dog with no hair at all still produces it.

What a low-shedding coat changes is where the allergen ends up. A coat that holds dead hair holds the dander stuck to it, so less drifts onto the sofa and into the air, which is why someone with a mild allergy may manage with a Poodle and cannot sit in a room with a Labrador. It is also why that coat has to be brushed and clipped on a schedule: the allergen has not gone anywhere, it is in the coat, and grooming day is when it comes out.

Reactions are individual rather than breed-wide. The studies that have measured Can f 1 in real homes have not found the breeds marketed as hypoallergenic to carry reliably less of it, and two dogs of the same breed can affect the same person differently. Coat type shifts the odds. It does not decide the outcome.

The only test worth anything is time with the actual dog. Spend a couple of hours indoors with an adult of the breed - not a puppy, whose coat has not finished changing, and not outdoors where the air does the work for you. Ask a breeder or a breed-specific rescue to arrange it; anyone worth getting a dog from will expect the question and would rather you asked before than after.

Often called hypoallergenic

These are the breeds usually sold as hypoallergenic, and that word is doing more work than it can carry - no breed is, and the question beside the title has the honest answer. What they genuinely are is low shedding, 3 or less out of 10, so there is far less hair on the sofa and in the car. What most of these coats really do is trade vacuuming for grooming: a standing appointment every six to eight weeks, plus brushing between them.
